How to Spot a Genuine Seiko SNXJ90

Because the Seiko SNXJ90 is discontinued and in high demand, the used market attracts pieced-together examples. Watches which are assembled from a mix of genuine, replacement and aftermarket parts and sold as the real thing. The good news: a genuine SNXJ90 leaves clues. Here is how to read them.

1. Start with the movement

An original SNXJ90 runs the Seiko 7S26 automatic. If a seller shows the movement, look for clean Seiko markings and the 7S26 calibre engraving. It can be that only the rotor has the engravings and in other cases the mainplate is engraved just under the balance wheel and there is an engraving on the A watch advertised as an original SNXJ90 that turns out to house an NH36 or another calibre is not an original, it is a build, and it should be described and priced as one. Neither is wrong to own; the problem is only when one is sold as the other.

2. Check the caseback

Seiko casebacks carry a model reference and a serial number. The reference should correspond to the SNXJ family, and the serial’s first digits encode the production date. Mismatches, ground-off engravings or a suspiciously generic caseback are red flags. Commonly used serial number for fake Seikos and especially the SNXJ series is 541315.

3. Inspect the dial and day-date

Look closely at the printing: Seiko dials are crisp and evenly applied. The day-date wheel font and alignment should look factory, and the “Seiko 5” and movement text should be sharp, not fuzzy. Reprinted or aftermarket dials often betray themselves under magnification.

4. Mind the crown position

The Seiko 5 crown sits at the distinctive 3.8 o’clock position, the same detail that helped identify the American Psycho watch on screen. It is a quick sanity check that the case is the right one.

5. Judge the seller, not just the watch

Clear, original photographs of the actual watch, an honest condition description, a stated movement, and a willingness to answer questions all matter. Stock photos, vague wording and prices well below the market are the classic warning signs.
